McKenzie Kil-A-Bytes2007 SeasonThe 2007 Season served as another great year for the McKenzie Robotics team. Competing at two regional events and the Championship Event, the robot offered a wide range of functionality in its matches. While the team did not experience as much success as they had expected in competition, the matches helped teach valuable lessons in creating a reliable, lasting robot as well as ways to avoid compromising robot reliability for functionality. Robot FeaturesThe 2007 Robot featured a multifuntional gripper, which could grab innertubes from any orientation, rotate the tube upwards, turn the wrist of the gripper, and raise the wrist of the gripper. This powerful arm was attached to a three-part elevator driven by two CIM motors which allowed the entire mechanism to clear the top rack. In addition, the robot had space alloted for the addition of 12-inch high ramps that would have allowed two alliance members to climb on top at the end of the game; unfortunately, the ramps put the robot over weight. 2007 Game: Rack 'N' RollTwo alliances, one red and one blue, composed of three teams each, compete in each match. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than your opponent alliance by placing the innertube game pieces on the central goal structure (the rack), and/or by having robots in their home zone and not in contact with the playing field at the end of the match. The center rack scoring works by counting the number of game pieces scored in a row - each extra tube doubles the points awarded. However, any row can be blocked by an opponent tube or a spoiler tube. At the end of a game, a robot that has been lifted a certain height from the ground also scores points - 15 points for 4 inches and 30 for 12 inches.
