FIRST® (For Inspiration Recognition of Science and Technology) is a program which strives “To create a world where science and technology are celebrated… where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.” FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, who holds more than 150 patents and is the inventor of the Segway. The core value of FIRST is Gracious Professionalism; high quality work, the value of teamwork, and the sense of community, while promoting competition through science and technology. Every year in January, teams receive the new game instructions and rules via NASA satellite feed. Each team has only 46 days to brainstorm, design, and build a robot. Professional Engineers mentor 1024 student-led sub-teams during the build and at competitions. Team 1024 also sponsors activities year-round to advance the appreciation of science and technology in the community.
